Julie's Cuban Restaurant, Toronto Reviews (3)
I have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Julie's, however this past weekend I was with a group of 6 people for my birthday celebration and the experience was not pleasant. Not only were we slapped with an 18% service charge without notice, but were informed as our dinner plates were being cleared that we had "11 minutes left in our reservation and that another group was coming in and we had to clear out" Needless to say, this did not go over well. When I go out for dinner, especially for a birthday dinner, I do not expect to be booted out without the opportunity for dessert!
Groups of 2,3 and 4 who were seated when we our group arrived, were lingering over their meal without being rushed out. And, I doubt they spent as much money as our group did.
We were definitely not impressed and will not be returning, nor recommending Julie's Cuban to anyone.

Went to Julie's for the first time December /08 after hearing so many great things and was truly disappointed. Most of the food was tasty, but it's full of fried goodies, over-priced tapas and very expensive entrees and bevvies. They served tostitos with their guac, the cheese quesadilla seemed to be a microwaved regular white tortilla with some sloppy cheese in it...not great for 8.95$. The drinks are extremely expensive and with our party of only 6 people they slapped on an 18% gratuity and didn't tell us! It has a cute atmosphere but I would not recommend this place for anything besides a very special meal out based on the prices. When you start ordering lots of tapas dishes the prices really add up and the value just isn't there.
Julie's is a secluded spot with a great patio, it certainly doesnt feel like you are in Toronto (of course, it doesnt really feel like Cuba either). It is on Dovercourt, very close to Queen, but there isnt a group of drunk hipsters in sight.
The mango avacado salad is a must, as is the black bean soup. We carried on choosing a selection of tapas, unfortunately as vegetarians we were limited to a small selection of potato and plantain based dishes, all of which were delicious, but filling. We had fallen asleep before we finished the walk home.
The food was great, the staff sweet and attentive, but I would only go back for a light lunch (though it was honestly the soundest sleep I have had in months!)

Yuca
I've never had Cuban food, but I've always wanted to try it. Is it really spicy?
They have a banana mango crumble for dessert, I didnt get to try it, as I was at capacity, but we can go together soon!
Is that how you spell that yummy Cuban veggie...MMmmmmm. I always walk by this place and have wanted to try it. I guess that I should go in and check it out.
Ok Yuca.I love that stuff. And YES we CAN go together :)
